We have 2 friends here who are Muslim (they are married -- Mark's Indian friend Tariq from high school and his gorgeous Egyptian wife, Sou) -- they had us over for dinner last month (Sou is a fabulous cook and made loads of food) and they totally let me pick their brains about Ramadan. Like, if you are ill, on a medicine you have to take every day, pregnant, or nursing, you don't have to follow it -- it's a spiritual thing and your health is more important. In Muslim countries, work hours are reduced, but pay isn't, during Ramadan (is this true for the UAE?) and if you're a surgeon who easily gets the low-blood sugar shakes, you either shouldn't fast or you shouldn't perform surgery during the day.
How are the dates in the UAE? I had some delicious Saudi ones at Sou & Tariq's house. OM NOM NOM. Food. I like to eat.
